Abstract:
Describes many studies indicating that human lungs 9and then hearts and perhaps brains) are damaged by routine exposure to very fine particles ranging in size from 2.5 micrometers (millionths of a meter) down to 0.1 micrometers in diameter. The smallest particles appear to be the most dangerous, and they have traditionally been ignored by air studies and by government regulators.
